A poker-powered deck-building game

Aces & Adventures is a deckbuilding adventure game that makes use of aspects of poker in the way the game mechanics work. The game takes place in a fantasy setting, though the gameplay is entirely card-based, so the setting is little more than scenery. There is a narrative attached to the card game being played, however.

While Aces & Adventures is technically a card game like 29 Card Game, it arguably has more in common with games like Digimon Card Game. This is especially the case when card-based gameplay is competitive, and each card has different powers that are used in battle.

Blending poker and deck-building

At its heart, Aces & Adventures is a deck-building game. The player must make strategic use of their cards to win battles. What makes this game stand out somewhat is the incorporation of poker into the game. Poker hands serve to make the power of cards more potent. High-value poker hands can obliterate the enemy in one almighty blow.

Slick graphics

While the game is entirely card-based, the visuals used to convey the action are impressive. The cards are displayed in high fidelity and move around with a satisfying feel to them. Things that the player can interact with also have a very satisfying feel to them. Overall, the game feels as though a lot of effort has been put in.

An interesting take on deck-building

While it may not be for everyone, Aces & Adventures is certainly an interesting take on the traditional deck-building game. The gameplay is fast-paced. Sessions last 10-20 minutes, and the visuals are satisfying and high-quality. Some familiarity with poker hands will make the learning curve less steep, but it is not essential to playing the game.

PROS

  • An interesting take on traditional deck-building games
  • Satisfying game physics and visuals give the game a high-quality feel
  • Fast-paced gameplay makes it ideal for short playing sessions
  • Features a rich narrative to accompany the game's events

CONS

  • Gameplay may be less intuitive to players who do not know poker hands
